Teeth Whitening Q&A
What causes yellow teeth?
Discolored teeth can severely impact how and when you smile. Surprisingly, yellow teeth often have little to do with how well you care for your teeth. Some of the common causes of stained teeth include:
- Dentin: The inner material in your teeth shows through thin enamel.
- Food: Many dark foods like berries and tomatoes discolor teeth
- Drinks: Wine and coffee contain compounds that stain teeth
- Genetics: Tooth color runs in families
- Age: Teeth often gray or yellow as you age
- Medication: Antibiotics your mother took while pregnant may have yellowed your teeth.
- Smoking: Nicotine stains teeth — as if you need another reason to quit.
- Trauma: Damage to a tooth’s interior can cause discoloration.
What is Zoom! Whitening?
There are many different products around to brighten your smile. Drugstore toothbrushes and toothpastes use abrasion or chemicals to break down surface stains. Their results don’t last as long or provide the results that professional products and services do.
Professional whitening treatments go deep below your surface enamel, reacting with the carbon that causes teeth to yellow. Teeth become whiter from the inside out. Dr. Tsiolas offers professional white strips and whitening trays you can use at home. But for the most dramatic results, he recommends Zoom! Whitening.
Zoom! is the number one patient-requested professional whitening formula available, used by more than 10 million people worldwide. Chairside Zoom! Whitening can brighten your teeth up to eight shades in a single session.
How does professional teeth whitening work?
Dr. Tsiolas begins your professional whitening treatment by isolating the teeth using a cheek retractor. Resin is then applied to the gums, protecting them from the bleaching gel. Next, Zoom! Whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated by a special light.
Finally, Dr. Tsiolas applies fluoride to complete the process. Your teeth will be six to ten shades lighter immediately after treatment, getting progressively brighter over the next few days. He may also recommend that you supplement your office whitening with take-home trays.
